Statement on the 45 democracy campaigners' "verdict"

19 Nov 2024

We must be strong among core liberal parties. Labour must talk with the Liberal Democrats on Standing with Hong Kong, Taiwan and the Uyghurs.
PM Starmer's talk with Xi is not wise.

Our statement on the latest political persecutions in HK adding extensive prison terms to pro-democracy campaigners:

The political persecutions showed democracy and civil liberties are dead in Hong Kong. Those further sentenced in HK last night are academics, journalists and pro-democracy politicians. The hope has always been that the new Labour Government can take a realistic look on a strategic China Review. We can't go back to a soft approach when we're sure of China as a challenging and authoritarian regime.

It's sad that the leader of the Official Opposition - The Conservatives - have vouched for an isolationist leader in the United States - one who wants to give a leeway to Putin. And President Xi vouch for Putin too.

We must be strong among core liberal parties. The Liberal Democrats, ever standing firm with democracy movement in Hong Kong, wants to work with Labour when both our parties stated in our manifesto to crack down on goods tainted with Forced Labour from Xinjiang. We should be talking to each other to Stand with Hong Kong, Taiwan and the Uyghurs. Starmer's new government doesn't have to go alone.
