UK International Development Budget is evermore essential
We call on Parliament to:
1. Ensure long-term goals on building soft infrastructures, enabling
developing countries to grow in prosperity, develop secured supply
chains, civil liberties and global values.
2. Recognise China as a threat in these dangerous times. Beijing's ties
with Russia during Russia's war on Ukraine, the serious human rights
violation in Xinjiang and unilateral expansionism in the South China
Sea showed her unwillingness to defend global stability or engage in
multilateralism for tolerance and equality.
3. Bring the UK's International Development budget to 0.7% of the GNI
to counter influences such as China's Belt and Road Initiative.
The Guardian reported that the international development budget will be 0.36% of gross national income (GNI).
We believe that the UK excels in building soft infrastructure. What we lack is a long-term plan. We can work
towards building resilient networks where free and open states do not have to become patrons of China, which
will only pull nations further into autocracy.
