What The Hong Kong Identity means to me
From the perspective of Nicholas Chan
Because Hong Kong was a migrant city on borrowed time, each of us may have different experiences. But on the whole, we fell into the following categories,
A) Newly arrivals to Hong Kong post-1997
B) Arrived in Hong Kong as first-generation immigrants but with close family members in HK
before the handover.
C) Second and beyond generations of Hong Kongers whose parents were born in Hong Kong
And with the last category comes a whole generation who grew up outside Hong Kong because their parents left Hong Kong due to political uncertainty.
This reflected a substantial collective as many professional or middle-income families moved to the US, Canada, Australia and the UK through tailored migration schemes.
For the UK, the scheme was named the British Nationality (Hong Kong) Selection Scheme in 1990.
Nicholas is one of those generations with a Hong Kong heritage who grew up outside of Hong Kong.
After graduation, he travelled back to Hong Kong and have spent years living in China.
Like many, he regards himself as British with a Hong Kong family heritage.
Nicholas is currently living in the UK.
